Caldeira Descent - The Perfect Adventure

The Caldeira Descent is the most exclusive trail in the Azores and is located within a Natural Reserve, available only with a guide accredited by the Faial Island Natural Park. As it is a sensitive location, it has a maximum daily capacity of 40 visitors.
The climb to Pico mountain and the descent to Caldeira do Faial are two adventures that complement each other. These are activities recommended for true nature lovers. Enter this exclusive trail inside the largest volcanic crater on the island of Faial. On this descent of around 400 meters (vertical), you will encounter the vegetation that covered the island before its settlement and feel what it is like to be in the center of one of the largest craters in the Azores. It is without a doubt a unique experience, not to be missed during your visit to Faial.
After the descent we will see the fountain inside and then head towards the intermittent lake. It will be like you are in Jurassic Park!

Important Information
What's included
- Transport to and from your Hotel
- Guided tour of the Faial Natural Park.
- Vehicle with air conditioning.
Time and meeting point
- Activity starts at 10:00.
- The Meeting Point will be between 9:15 and 9:30 outside your hotel reception, at the Maritime Terminal, or at the mentioned location in Horta. The guide will be in a gray Opel van.
- Please let us know if you prefer to travel by your own transport to the starting point of the hike. In this case, the meeting point will be at 10:00 am at the Miradouro da Caldeira do Faial.
What to bring
- Mandatory: Hiking boots/shoes (sneakers are not acceptable for this hike), comfortable and appropriate clothing for hiking (weather conditions can vary quickly in the Azores). This is a humid habitat so it is common to find flooded areas.
- Important: Water (minimum 1lt to keep you hydrated) and a snack for when we arrive at the base of the Caldeira.
- Optional: Sunscreen. Wearing clothing that covers the arms and legs is advisable due to the presence of brambles at the base of the crater.
